The Umbrella Academy Stars Break Down Season 3’s Epic Footloose Scene
Minor spoilers for The Umbrella Academy episode 3.01 follow! It’s been two years since season two of The Umbrella Academy debuted on Netflix and the third season finally arrived this week. While there’s a lot to react to in the new batch of episodes, the “Footloose” dance sequence that takes place within the first 8 minutes of the season premiere is one that many fans haven’t stopped raving about. talk since it was picked up from the massive cliffhanger that has lingered for quite some time. Speaking in exclusive interviews with ComicBook.com, the show’s cast and crew let us in on how it all went down and the amount of preparation that went into under very stressful circumstances.
“It was very important to get it right,” said series creator Steve Blackmon. “We didn’t use any dance doubles and we’re in the height of COVID and these actors worked on ZOOM (on) the first few rehearsals. They had their laptops open, their position 10 feet away. Then they walked into a studio with a mask and a shield; and we finally got on set and it was wonderful because we’re all in a bit of a dark place with Covid and then doing this dance. The laughs were there. L team got carried away. It was just five amazing days of joy just on set.
Five actor Aidan Gallagher called it ‘perhaps the hardest thing’ of his acting career, adding: ‘We rehearsed man it took at least two weeks while we were still in quarantine on Zoom for the dance sequence to start and to learn the moves, then countless hours of breathing heavily through thick masks because it was a pandemic while trying to learn those moves in the studio.” Gallagher also confirmed that some behind-the-scenes footage from the making of the dance is on the way in one form or another. “So that’s your favorite sequence. You’re going to have a great time.”
Tom Hopper, who plays Luther, revealed that doing the dance moves in his huge monkey costume is easier than you might think. “It doesn’t take too much of a challenge, but that (his specific dance) was such a random move that I found when we were just trying to think of new moves in the first session. It came from a night out with homies where i saw this girl trying to get along with this rugby player and it was like some kind of weird mating dance she was doing in front of him and me and my friends all remember that dance that she did. So when my boyfriend saw it on the show, he thought it was hilarious.
Finally, Allison actress Emmy Raver-Lampman gave an overview of everything that was planned and improvised, saying, “It took about two months, two and a half months of planning and rehearsing and organization to make it work. I think that was a highlight for all of us to be on that show. I think it was so wild and ridiculous and outrageous, but a lot of it was, the dancing itself- even was definitely choreographed, but there’s all the little vignettes and all that, all that, it felt like we were having fun that day, having fun.”
The three seasons of The Umbrella Academy are now streaming on Netflix.
