The Russian Emperor wins the Hampton Court Stakes – on Saturday his brother, the Commander of the Fleet, spends his first day at school
By Andrew Scutts
It’s hard to know where to start with Saturday’s nine fixture offering in Ireland and Britain, but certainly for those enjoying their first events, Cork, Newbury and Nottingham will attract plenty of interest.
In Cork, the 1m2f girl for three and over (4.00) has attracted large numbers, and quite a few of them are attracting attention.
One of them is that of Ballydoyle fleet commandera brother of the Russian Emperor, this year’s Group 1 Hong Kong Gold Cup winner, who also won the Hampton Court Stakes for Fleet Commander trainer Aidan O’Brien.
Late sire Galileo needs no introduction, while dam Atlantic Jewel was an outstanding performer herself, winning four top races, including three at Caulfield,
Fleet Commander runs in Atlantic Jewel Syndicate silks and was bred by Coolmore, Louri Macri and partners.
Teammate Martinstown – and no, he’s not owned by JP McManus, but his daughter, and Martinstown breeder Sue-Ann Foley in partnership with Coolmore – is also by Galileo and out of Listed Alive winner Alive Oh.
This makes him a brother to Free Wind, winner of the Park Hill Stakes and Prix Minerve last year.
Also in training, Joseph O’Brien trained Olympicwho ran a Marking Your Card the other day but didn’t run.
He is out of American Triple Crown winner American Pharoah and Prix Marcel Boussac winner and Moyglare Stud Stakes winner Rumpelstiltskin, and thus a half-brother to Yorkshire Oaks Tapestry winner and Group 3 winner John F Kennedy.
As for Newbury, and both of the mile maiden divisions (4.10 and 4.45) look better and will take a few wins.
In the first division, Nawras is something of a happy throwback as Shadwell bought 625,000 gns in the October 2020 Book 1 sale, before of course Hamdan Al Maktoum died the following year.
Bred by Fittocks Stud and Andrew Bengough of former Umniyah, the son of great Sea The Stars is a brother to American winner The Path Not Taken. He represents the Marcus Tregoning shipyard.
In the second division, Tregoning releases a homebred Shadwell, Morgombrother to one winner and half-brother to five others including Greenlands Stakes and Jersey Stakes winner Mustajeeb.
Out of Rifqah, he is by Dubawi and like his stable mate in the previous race will have Jim Crowley’s assistance in the saddle.
Among its rivals is James Wigan’s homebred morning shift, trained by Sir Michael Stoute. Per Time Test and Hayyona, the colt is closely related to New Bay’s son Bay Bridge, a four-time winner last year including the James Seymour Stakes Listed.

Another homebred to attract attention is that of Yvonne Jacques Compensate, the first foal of Karisma, the Lingfield winner, and by Lope De Vega. Although the mother hasn’t scaled too many heights on the racetrack, she is a half-sister to Lope De Vega’s classic hero Phoenix Of Spain.
The 1m3f (5.20) young girl who follows also looks hot. Charlie Appleby, who started the Flat season in great shape, saddles two very interesting newcomers in natural world and the Ottoman fleet.
The first, a son of champion stallion Frankel, is a Godolphin out of Skiffle, winner of the Listed Height of Fashion Stakes.
Ottoman fleet – William Buick’s mount, possibly suggesting he is number one in the stable – was a 425,000gns purchase by Godolphin in the October 1, 2020 Book 1 sale. By Sea The Stars , he is out of Innevera, a well-linked winner in France.
Among the opposition is another expensive buy from the 2020 yearling sales, in the trained John and Thady Gosden shadowfaxwhich cost Arqana €490,000 in connections.
Representing Qatar Racing and LNJ Foxwoods at Newbury, the colt is by Galileo and the first foal out of Prix winner Minerve Golden Valentine, from the family of the great Goldikova.
There isn’t much breathing space as the notable inaugural action continues into the evening in Nottingham, where the mile and a quarter (6.15) contest in particular is worth watching.
Among the declared 13, and from the still respected combination of Roger Varian and Sheikh Mohammed Obaid, is Almerica half-brother to Aclaim, no less.
Dam Aris was a winning Irishwoman herself, siring Group 1 winner Aclaim who became a successful National Stud sire.
Three-year-old Almeric is from Frankel and has set his owner back 360,000 gns in book 1 in 2020 – a sale that is something of a theme in Saturday’s action.
Also wearing the colors of Sheikh Obaid is space odyssey, a son of Sea The Stars and Lady Of Dubai from the breeder-owner, Listed winner at Goodwood and also third behind Qualify in the Oaks. The homebred is with the Richard Hannon shipyard.
The Stoute-formed believe in the starsowned by Saeed Suhail, was a purchase of book 2 in 2020 for 175,000 gns and he is a brother to Rose Of Kildare, who totally denied his €3,000 price tag by claiming three group 3.
Their dam, Cruck Realta, was a good performer during her racing days, winning the Listed Ballymacoll Stud Stakes, and her runner from Nottingham on Saturday is by Make Believe.
Stoute also runs the Queen’s homebred naval schoolwho was already neutered before his debut.
