It’s time to say goodbye to Shiva, bring home a new lion from Haryana
Indore (Madhya Pradesh): The dangers of inbreeding threaten not only the life and very existence of human beings, but also for all living things, including feral cats. With that in mind, it’s time to say goodbye to Shiva and bring home a new lion from Haryana.
Kamla Nehru Prani Sanghralaya (Indore City Zoo) has confirmed an exchange with Haryana to change the lineage of the lions. Indore City Zoo is known for the most lion numbers and is the best breeding center for feral cats in the country. One of the main reasons Indore can achieve this position is the proper care and control of any type of inbreeding.
“The exchange papers have been signed”
âInbreeding in any animal, just like in humans, can lead to genetic problems and is never considered scientifically correct. The lion population has increased in Indore. However, we are restricted in terms of lineage in the next generation. Therefore, we have plans to exchange a lion and bring in a new lineage. We sent proposals to various zoos across the country and were able to find a compatible exchange opportunity with the Bhiwani City Zoo in Haryana. With the exchange confirmed at both ends, the exchange papers were signed recently. We will soon be planning the transfer of the lions’
– Dr Uttam Yadav, responsible for the city zoo
Who goes to Haryana?
§ A young lion named Shiva will travel to Haryana for the exchange
§ He is four years old and in good health
§ Shiva is one of the last generations of lions in the city zoo
§ He also has younger brothers and sisters; however, he is in the prime of his life which makes him one of the best choices for the trade.
Inbreeding in animals
§ Inbreeding is technically defined as the mating of animals more closely related than the average relationship within the breed or population concerned
§ For practical reasons, if two mated individuals do not have a common ancestor during the last five or six generations, their offspring will be considered as outbred
Inbreeding results in …
§ Consanguinity leads to homozygosity and this increases with subsequent generations. Homozygosity means that children have similar genes and similarities with their parents
§ In such cases, recessive traits that might otherwise be masked often begin to appear as a result of repeated crossbreeding
§ Therefore, a negative consequence of inbreeding is that it makes the expression of unwanted recessive traits more likely.
§ The other negative effect of inbreeding is the reduction in genetic diversity. Diversity helps organisms survive changes in the environment and adapt over time. Inbred organisms can suffer from what is called reduced biological fitness
