Hammered Hulls (Alec MacKaye, Mary Timony) Preparing Debut Album, Shares ‘Rights and Reproductions’
Hammered hullsthe mostly DC punk/indie veteran band whose Alec MacKaye (Untouchables, Faith, Ignition, etc.) Mary Timony (Autoclave, Helium, Wild Flag, Ex Hex, etc.), Marc Cisneros (Kid Congo, The Make-Up, etc.), and Chris Wilson (Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Titus Andronicus), announced their debut album. Fairing due out October 28 via Dischord Records (Pre-order) and follows the first EP of 2019.
As with this EP, Hammered Hulls recorded Fairing at the famed DC-area Inner Ear recording studio, which closed last year, with the studio’s engineer and owner Don Zientara and producer Ian Mac Kaye (Alec’s brother, among others).
Here’s More From Another DC Punk Vet’s Album Guy Picciotto (Fugazi, Rites of Spring):
Alec MacKaye has been an inspiration to me since I was 15, when his bands The Untouchables and Faith had their massive crater-sized impacts on me. “Inspiration” doesn’t do him justice – in the chaos of his performance and the power of his voice, Alec has always been for me the distant horizon of what any singer could aspire to be. It’s probably the only debt you can incur that feels like a gift.
That he’s still giving me that same energy now 42 years later with his band Hammered Hulls isn’t really a surprise, but it’s extremely welcome. Mary Timony, Chris Wilson and Mark Cisneros, three musicians of absurd pedigree, sensibility and talent, create a hard yet supple weave, the perfect setting for Alec’s singular voice and words. Their new single “Rights and Reproduction” colonized my mind when I saw them perform live and is now equally disruptive in its recorded form. A high water mark has been redrawn. The hammered hulls are real.
With the announcement of the album, the band released the single “Rights and Reproduction”, an anthemic punk jam that continually escalates with soaring vocals and instrumental tension and ends in a cathartic breakdown. Listen and watch the album cover for Fairingbelow.
Hammered Hulls will visit a handful of cities after the release of Careening, starting with Washington, DC, and ending with NYC on December 2 at TV Eye in Queens. All dates below.
